Boat Market, Manikganj, Dhaka, Bangladesh - 08 Aug 2023

Hundreds of hand-crafted wooden boats are lined up for sale at Bangladesh's largest boat market in Manikganj, Bangladesh. People flocked to the open-air market to buy boats in a bid to prepare for the upcoming rainy season. Used by the locals during monsoon when heavy rainfall causes the river bank to burst, submerging nearby towns and villages, each vessel costs between £30 and £80 depending on its size and the quality of the materials used to build them. Bangladesh, with its dense population and plethora of rivers, has weathered more than its share of tropical storms, floods, and other natural disasters. During the South Asia monsoon season between June and October, marked by frequent and heavy rainfall, rivers' banks in the low-lying areas burst frequently as they cannot handle the amount of water pouring out of the Himalayas, triggering devastating floods. So, the boat is the only way of communication in the low-lying area. The demand for Dingi and Khosa Nauka (small boats) has increased for regular movement of people in flood-prone areas where flash floods prevent the use of cars, buses, and rickshaws because of low-cost convenience. Bangladesh is known as "ground zero for climate change" and faces additional stress as nearly 75% of Bangladesh sits below sea level and faces annual floods.
