Taiwan to hold referendum at the risk of losing the right to join Olympics, Taipei - 22 Nov 2018
Taiwanese people holding frames reading 'Say Yes To Taiwan' and 'Call Us Taiwan at Tokyo Olympics,' urging people to vote in favor for the name change in the up-coming referendum in Taipei, Taiwan, 22 November 2018. The referendum on 24 November will ask voters if Taiwan should attend international sports events and the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games under the name of 'Taiwan' instead of its current name 'Chinese-Taipei.' China sees Taiwan as its breakaway province and forces Taiwan to attend international organizations and sports events as 'Chinese-Taipei'. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has warned that holding the name-change referendum could make Taiwan lose its membership in IOC making Taiwanese athletes unable to attend international sports events.
