Right-wing movement in Romania protest against workers from outside the EU, Bucharest - 17 Nov 2023

Members of the movement named 'New Right Association' hold placards during a protest against foreign workers from outside the European Union, held in front of the Ministry of Labor and Social Solidarity, in Bucharest, Romania, 17 November 2023. The far-right movement called for the protest against what the describe as 'the artificial and forced increase in the contingent of foreign workers', exclusively from non-European countries. The business environment in Romania is facing an exponential increase in the need for labor, given that approximately 6,000,000 people emigrated from Romania between 1992 and 2023. Currently, 97,300 foreign workers work legally in Romania, 60 percent of them work in construction, manufacturing and trade. The number of workers from non-EU countries who have employment contracts in Romania has increased by 816 percent in the last decade, from 10,619 people in 2014 to 97,300 in 2023. The countries from which most foreign workers come are Nepal, Sri Lanka, Turkey, India and Bangladesh, according to a statistic from the Labor Inspection.
