Palestine Rallies at the School of Visual Arts and the New School in New York City, US - 02 May 2024

Pro-Palestine protesters demonstrate outside of an entrance at the School of Visual Arts. Pro-Palestine demonstrators rallied outside of universities in Manhattan, New York City, including at the School of Visual Arts, SVA, and the New School. Meanwhile, inside both schools, students have been holding a sit-in protest, forming a "Gaza Solidarity Encampment." The students in SVA formed their encampment on Thursday. The students in the New School formed their encampment on April 21. These encampments were inspired by a similar encampment at Columbia University, which was dismantled by the New York City Police Department on Tuesday. After the encampment was created at Columbia University, students have been forming encampments on college campuses worldwide in support of Palestine. Since the war started on October 7, 2023, Gaza's health ministry said more than 34,000 people have been killed in Gaza, a territory ruled by Hamas. The death toll does not differentiate between civilians and combatants.
