John Wisbey, acting chair of the Barton House tenants association pictured outside City Hall this afternoon before Bristol City Council told Barton House residents at a meeting this afternoon that Barton House tower block where they live can be made safe for them to return to their homes, though not for Christmas as it will take about two months to repair before they can return. Until then they will have to continue staying in a hotel or with friends or family for Christmas. Barton House is a high-rise residential tower block in Barton Hill which had a voluntary evacuation on Tuesday 14 November after a serious structural issue was found and over 250 residents including 100 children were asked to evacuate and it was feared they would need to be permanently rehoused. Residents were asked to go to rest centres and take a bag with what they needed for a few days, which turned into a month, while the council organised more tests on the structure of the building which was built in the late 1950s. The structural issue was being reported as to how the floors are tied to the walls of the tower block, but the council say the problems they found previously are not widespread through the tower block.
