Blue Tit Populations Closely Linked To Numbers Of Moth Caterpillars, UK - 06 Apr 2024

Adult and baby Blue Tits in a garden. The critical importance of moth caterpillar numbers to the population size of a common insect eating garden bird, the blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus), were highlighted in a new study. The study that was recently published reports that the population dynamics of the blue tit are influenced by the abundance of moths a main component of their breeding diet. When moths are abundant, blue tit populations increase the next spring and summer, suggesting that moth abundance directly affects this bird population. Insect abundance directly impacts songbird numbers from year to year.
