Chemical waste from factories flows unhindered into the Buriganga River, in Dhaka, Bangladesh, June 1, 2024. Dyeing factories in the capital's Shampur area continued to pollute the River Burigangana by releasing raw liquid waste directly into the river. Pollution and loss of navigability in the Buriganga and other rivers surrounding the capital are forcing thousands of people to change their livelihoods. Many fishermen and boatmen who once depended on these rivers for a living have switched to other professions as the rivers have become too polluted and dried up in places.
