STUMPY REMOVAL, Washington, Dc, USA - 24 May 2024

The removal of the iconic and beloved cherry tree named Stumpy takes place at the Tidal Basin behind mesh fencing and secrecy in Washington DC on May 24, 2023. Construction and removal of approximately 300 trees has begun to repair the eroding sea wall. Citizens have overwhelmingly voiced their desire to 'Save Stumpy' as a national treasure and symbol of resilience. They had hoped transplanting would at least be attempted since the fact he has been blooming for years was viewed as a miracle and it would have given him a chance. But that was rejected by the National Park Service as well as a request by the Smithsonian museum to preserve the tree as part of the collection in the Natural History museum for generations to view and learn from. That was also rejected by NPS in favor of a wood chipper which has caused frustration, outrage and sadness. It was also stated the Stumpy would be kept alive for weeks in order to achieve optimum growth for cuttings used by the Arboretum for propagation of clones. But the tree was removed today with no warning. All trees will be turned into mulch to spread around new cherry trees after the 3 year project is completed.
