Armistice remembrance day war horse memorial, Bristol, UK - 11 Nov 2023

; Bristol, UK. Armistice Day to commemorate the end of the First World War and all those who fell in wars and conflicts serving in the armed forces of the UK. The War Horse memorial at the Daisy Field in Shirehampton has been dressed with poppies and a poem "Longest Day" for the Armistice and Remembrance weekend to commemorate horses sent to the front in World War One from the Remount Station in Shirehampton which was one of several that were set up across the UK during 1914 until 1918. The life-size sculpture is made out of 380 used horseshoes and was made by Farrier/Blacksmith Jason Baggs, a former resident of Shirehampton, from an original idea by Diane Gait a founder member of Friends of Lamplighters Marsh. Shirehampton was one of the largest remount stations providing horses and training before the horses were shipped out to the war front via Avonmouth docks. Over 300,000 horses passed through Shirehampton and Avonmouth between 1914 and 1918. At the beginning of the war most of these horses came from British farms, but this supply was quickly exhausted. By 1915 most of the animals were shipped over from Canada or the US to be stabled at Shirehampton before they were sent to the front as required.
