A European Hornet (Vespa crabro) Adult hornets range in size between 2 and 5 cm in length.The workers can sting but they aren't usually aggressive when they're around the nest. Hornets usual nest in holes in trees. Nests have also been found in attics or wall voids and occasionally in the ground. European hornets have a hearty appetite. They are known to feed on large insects, such as grasshoppers and bees. Some scientists believe that the European hornet can destroy bee hives, killing around 40 honey bees a minute. If you want to find a nest then you need to hunt for hornets in the evening. Workers are active at night. These hornets can cause damage to trees by stripping the bark off to eat the sap.
