Rex Theater: From Cultural Symbol to Violence Refugee in Haiti, Port Au Prince - 28 May 2024
People sleep on the floor inside the Rex Theater, a monument of cultural importance during the last century in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, 28 May 2024. The Rex Theater, which was inaugurated in October 1935 and had a capacity for 1,200 people, is located in front of the Champs de Mars gardens and next to the National Palace. It is currently serving as a refuge for hundreds of people who have had to flee their homes due to armed gang violence. According to the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti, in 2023 alone, violence caused at least 8,000 victims in Haiti, where gangs control much of Port-au-Prince and other areas of the country.
