University in Manhattan, New York City condemning the Israel Defense Forces' military operations in Gaza. For nearly two weeks, students and pro-Palestine activists at Columbia University have held a sit-in protest on campus, forming a "Gaza Solidarity Encampment." Overnight, students and protesters inside the campus occupied a university building named Hamilton Hall and blocked the entrances. University administration threatened to expel the students who are occupying the building. On Monday, the university said it started suspending students who are protesting at the "Gaza Solidarity Encampment." There has been increasing tension between the student protesters and the university officials regarding the use of law enforcement to disassemble the encampment. Since the war started on October 7, 2023, Gaza's health ministry said more than 34,000 people have been killed in Gaza, a territory ruled by Hamas. The death toll does not differentiate between civilians and combatants.
