New parking restrictions on Saltgrass Lane and New Lane could end overnight stays and wild camping at Keyhaven, The New Forest, Hampshire - 19 Jan 2024

The parking areas in Saltgrass Lane where wild campers have been staying causing problems for locals and holidaymakers wanting to park. New parking restrictions could be introduced at a Keyhaven beauty spot to stop overnight stays by dozens of camper vans. The restriction is set to be considered by Hampshire County Council later this year at Saltgrass Lane and New Lane, close to Hurst Spit. The area is featured on a number of camping and caravanning websites which hailed the quiet and natural surroundings, with one describing the area as a "great place with plenty of space for numerous vehicles". Parking on the two roads is currently unrestricted, leading to complaints that up 60 vans and camper vans are using them overnight during the peak summer months. In 2020 Milford parish councillors claimed they were receiving a barrage of daily complaints about wild campers living for "weeks at a time" in vans parked at the coastal site. The situation was partially blamed on the controversial closure of New Forest campsites during the first few months of the pandemic.
