Dandora Dumpsite in Nairobi, Kenya - 22 Oct 2020

Recyclable plastic waste material is seen packed in blue bags at Dandora dumpsite in the outskirts of Nairobi awaiting to be transported to a recycling plant. Dandora dumpsite which is Nairobi's biggest dumpsite receives an average of 2,000 metric tonnes of waste daily, most of it being mixed waste composed of largely compostable, metal, electronic, plastic among others. Recently there has been concern from Kenyans after a leaked letter written by the American Petro-Chemical Lobby Group, urging American Trade Negotiators to request Kenyan government to lessen its tough stance on plastic restrictions and to make Kenya an American plastic production hub for Africa. Many have interpreted this as a scheme to lift Kenya's 2017 plastic bag ban hailed as the strictest globally. Single-use plastic waste which is hardest to recycle remains most problematic environmental pollutant in Kenya.
