Naja Nouri, an Afghan high school graduate, leans to carve wooden showpiece in Kabul, Afghanistan, 29 May 2024. 18-year-old Najla Nouri from Nuristan province, Afghanistan has taken up the art of wood carving, traditionally practiced in her hometown, alongside her painting. A recent high school graduate, Nouri decided to pursue this craft out of passion and as a response to the limited opportunities available for girls in her country. Her goal is to showcase this traditional Afghan art form to the world, highlighting its beauty and cultural significance. Enjila also runs a shop in the Kabul market where she sells goods and participates in local exhibitions. Her main clientele are female school students who, due to the lack of educational opportunities, wish to learn and benefit from the art of carving. The female students, who also work in the shop, are calling for government support and opportunities to sell their products. The rise of handicraft work among women and girls in Kabul in recent years has led to the activation of dozens of workshops in the city, Enjila Ender said. United Nations agencies have said that the restrictions imposed by the Taliban on women and girls will increase the number of child marriages among Afghan girls by 25 per cent, UN Women, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), and the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) have released a joint two-page brief.
