EXCLUSIVE - Giovanni Bulgari launches the famous jewelry company into the winemaking business - Tuscany, Italy - 26 Jun 2012

EMBARGOED FOR WEB AND APPS IN FRANCE UNTIL JULY 10, 2012 - Giovanni Bulgari , son of Paolo Bulgari, president of the famous jewelry company poses in Tuscany, Italy on June 12, 2012 where he launched the family into the winemaking business. The Bulgari name has long been associated with luxury jewelry worn by some of the most famous celebrities in the world. A new wine venture by Giovanni Bulgari, will release its first three wines this year. 'Our first battle is not to be known as the Bulgari wine,' said Giovanni Bulgari, 36, chief executive of PoderNuovo. I want to create elegant wines respecting the diversity of their character: the common denominator among them is elegance, in harmony and in respect of their soil. The vines and their soils always have specific needs, which must be interpreted and respected in order to obtain the best wines. The real challenge is to show that we can produce good wine very well '. The Podernuovo a Palazzone vineyards are located close to San Casciano dei Bagni, in the southernmost Tuscan hills. Here streams, wind and climate create a formidable natural environment for the production of unique wines. The vineyards expands for over 20 hectares, with a density of 5,400 plants per hectare that includes Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot vines. Initial production is set for 60,000 bottles, with a goal of doubling that when the vineyard is fully operational. The wines will sell wholesale for 12, 16 or 20 euros. The Bulgaris join other famous families from the world of luxury brands, like the Cavallis and the Ferragamos, in trying to produce wine.
