Freed slaves planting sweet potatoes at the Hopkinson plantation on Edisto Island, South Carolina, 1862. Upon occupying the Sea Islands of South Carolina’s coast, the Union Army discovered 10,000 enslaved African Americans abandoned by fleeing Confederates planters. Thus began the Civil War cooperation between the ex-slaves and the Union Army, that anticipated post-war Reconstruction. Photo by Henry P. Moore
