Gen. Robert E. Lee, in his Confederate uniform. March 1864 portrait by Julian Vannerson. In 1864 Lee faced a new Union foe in Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. Their battles during the 1864 Overland Campaign, (Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, and Cold Harbor) had no clear battlefield victor, but they cost the Confederacy irreplaceable soldiers and resources.
