A large group of enslaved African Americans on the J. J. Smiths cotton plantation in 1862. They were left on the coastal plantation when their master fled as the Union army occupied the sea islands near Beaufort, South Carolina, in later 1861. When the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect on Jan. 1, 1863, they transitioned from their contraband status to than of Freedmen and Freedwomen
