Explosive war remnants affect people in Yemen, Sanaa - 13 Sep 2023

Explosive remnants of war are being collected at a disposal ground in Sana'a, Yemen, 13 September 2023. Yemen is heavily contaminated by millions of landmines and explosive remnants of war due to nine years of conflict, posing an ongoing threat to the lives of many communities living in conflict-affected areas of the Arab country, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has warned. Landmines and unexploded remnants of war have caused at least 150 civilian casualties in Yemen during the first half of 2023, while 37 Yemenis, including 12 children were casualties in the explosions of landmines and other remnants of war in August 2023, according to estimates by the Houthis administration-run Yemen Executive Mine Action Center (YEMAC). Over 10 thousand Yemeni people have been killed and injured due to landmines, cluster bombs, unexploded shells and other weapons or munitions since the outbreak of the war in March 2015 when the Saudi-led military coalition launched a military operation against the Houthis, who overthrew the Yemeni government, according a report by the United Nations (UN).
