Miners Trapped Inside Collapsed Gold Mine in Amur Oblast, Russia Are Declared Dead, Amur Oblast, Russia, Russia - 08 Apr 2024

[Note: undated footage] A rescue operation for the 13 trapped miners of a collapsed Russian goldmine has been stopped after they were all declared dead. Local media reported that rescuers have had no contact with the trapped miners since 18th March. And rescuers who drilled a number of exploration wells said on 25th March that there was water in the mine. But, now, the mine administration said that the rescue operation had to be stopped due to the risk of another collapse, according to local media. The wells drilled to places where people could be found were flooded with water, clay and ice, according to the administration. The Pioneer Mine said they would pay the miners' families a lump sum of the miner's annual salary, which will be provided to each family member. They also said the children of miners will be paid their average monthly earnings until they reach adulthood. The managing director of the Pioneer Mine in the Zeya Municipal District in the Amur region, Alexey Biryukov, was arrested on 25th March. He faces up to seven years in prison if two or more deaths occur in the mine. The first piece of footage shows the authorities arresting Biryukov and reading him his rights before escorting him out of the building and into an unmarked van. The second piece of footage shows rescue workers in the mine and working the scene in a desperate bid to rescue those trapped underground. Biryukov was arrested on suspicion of having violated Article 216 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, specifically when carrying out work at the mine. Video shows operations to rescue at least 13 miners who have been trapped in a collapsed gold mine in Amur, Russia. The miners were trapped at a depth of 125 meters. [Note: speech in Russian]
