New Information board for town's 18th century inventor unveiled, Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire, UK - 31 May 2024

Boats out on the river on a dull and blustery afternoon. An information board commemorating the final resting place of Humphrey Gainsborough has been unveiled in Henley. It is on the railings at the entrance to the Christ Church manse in Reading Road. It displays information about the life of the inventor. who was Henley's non-conformist minister from 1749 to 1775. It is next to a blue plaque commemorating Gainsborough, who is buried with his wife nearby under what is now a rhubarb patch in the manse garden. The information board was researched by Vivienne Greenwood, who is a member of the Henley Archaeological and Historical Group, and designed by graphic artist Mark Baker. It is the 10th such board commemorating Henley's benefactors and significant figures of the past.
