At the age of 15, she was the first African American to graduate from the Brockport State Normal School in 1870 in New York State. In 1896 Williams was a founder of the National Association of Colored Women, and assisted W.E.B. DuBois in forming the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1909
