Savoca, Messina, Sicily. Also this year the city of Savoca, whose beauties did not go unnoticed in the eyes of Francis Ford Coppola in the scenes of The Godfather, returns to being the scene of one of the most heartfelt religious events in the Ionian panorama, the Festa di Santa Lucia. The cult of the Saint, in this Borgo, has been practiced since the end of the fifteenth century. The festival takes place on the second Sunday of August and is organized by the confraternity of Santa Lucia, according to the provisions of a statute dated 1831. A spectacular procession in costume enlivens the streets of the city and represents the martyrdom of Santa Lucia, personified by a little girl being carried on the shoulder by a man. The little girl wears a white dress and remains motionless for the entire duration of the procession without falling into the hands of the Roman soldiers she meets along the way and without being tempted by the Devil (u Divulazzu), dressed in red and wearing an ancient and legendary origin. At the end of the procession, as in Spain, several oxen are let escape through the streets of the town. Another story, between folklore and religion, of a land with a denied primordial identity and whose current individuality is the result of the continuous metamorphoses caused by the dominations that have taken place on the island over the centuries.Informații importante
