Electoral symbols and decorative items on sale ahead of general elections, Karachi, Pakistan - 03 Jan 2024

Decorative items of Pakistan People Party depicting images of party's chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and his mother slain former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto are on sale at a market ahead of general elections in Karachi, Pakistan, 03 January 2024. Human rights groups and independent monitors in Pakistan have raised concerns over the credibility of the upcoming parliamentary elections, citing a crackdown on a mainstream political party Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) and increased media censorship. The nonprofit organization FAFEN, dedicated to promoting good governance and fair elections in Pakistan, has called on the election commission to publicly disclose its objections and eventual rejections of candidates' nomination papers in order to enhance electoral transparency. The government, led by Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, has been accused of favoring pro-military political parties and manipulating the electoral landscape. The rejection of candidacies of the country's largest political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and its leader, former Prime Minister Imran Khan, on alleged flimsy grounds has raised doubts about the fairness of the electoral process. The international community and advocacy groups are calling for transparency and inclusivity in the electoral process to ensure credibility and legitimacy.
