French farmers boots used by Blondie Hasler to make his escape after the raid. Rare items from the historic commando 'Cockleshell Heroes' raid in World War 2 are to go on show this week to mark its 80th anniversary. According to the museum no one remembers when the items had been on show before. Items donated by the families that once were used by Capt 'Blondie' Hasler and his team of nine other men can be seen at a special event at The National Royal Navy Museum in Portsmouth along with a special showing of the feature film made for the cinema.Operation Frankton, as it was called took place of the West Coast of France from 7th to the 12th December 1942. A team of Royal Marines paddled 70 miles up the River Gironde during the hours of darkness and in all it took 5 days to reach Bordeaux, where they laid explosive charges on enemy shipping. The raid was led by Herbert 'BlondieÓ Hasler DSO, OBE and struck a significant blow to German shipping in France. Also it showed that no German installation was safe from enemy attack. ItÊhelped to boost the morale of the British at a time when the allies had not really got an upper hand in the conflict.Portsmouth Historic Dockyard isÊhosting events allowing visitors to get closer to this true story. A key one is allowing access to 'Storehouse 12' with a tour called Operation Frankton Behind the Scenes.Tickets need to be booked in advance and will take place on Sunday 11th December, 1pm, 1:45pm and 2:30pm.
