Gerardo Maiella (Muro Lucano, 6 April 1726 - Materdomini, 16 October 1755) was an Italian religious of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer. Beatified by Pope Leo XIII in 1893, he was canonized by Pope Pius X in 1904. Gerardo Maiella is today universally invoked as protector of pregnant women. He died of tuberculosis in the Redemptorist convent of Materdomini of Caposele at the age of 29, 16 October 1755, after a short period spent in bed during which, it is said, prodigious events were not lacking.The cult of the Saint is present in different parts of the world.The Roman martyrology sets the date of 16 October for his liturgical memorial. In Capodigiano, a hamlet of Muro Lucano, a statue of the Madonna with the Child Jesus in her arms was venerated. Gerard reached the church, knelt down and remained in prayer for a long time; finally, the Child Jesus came down and gave him a white sandwich, which he brought home. The episode was repeated many times. In the city where the remains of Saint Alphonsus Maria de' Liguori, a doctor of the Catholic Church, lie, Saint Gerard is highly venerated, being a spiritual son of the Saint and belonging to the same religious order.
