WWII: Peace in Europe: Germany: Allied Occupation: Russian Forces.Berlin: Barge traffic in Russian occupied East Germany has been virtually cripple owing to the British action of giving the Soviet authorities a dose of their own medicine. About 45 Eastern barges are now held up at canal locks in Western Berlin while British Military Police make minute checks on their documents. The action, which is understood to have the support of the Americans and French, is in reprisal for similar Soviet tactics at the border between East and West Germany. Following the Russian example, the British are now ordering that all crew lists must bear the stamp of the British High Commission, cargoes must conform exactly to specifications in bills of lading, and that a charge of 1,000 West Marks is to be levied against each barge when the weighing of cargo is necessary. picture shows: British Military Police on duty at the Spandau Lock, in the British sector, to check lading papers of East-German barges
