Pictured: Scott Darroch readies equipment for the Highland Games which are coming to the south of England this weekend. The village of Holybourne near Alton, Hants, hosts its first Highland Games, seeing athletes participate in the iconic Scottish events so the cricket club can raise enough money to replace their artificial pitch. Chieftan of the Games, Scott Darroch, originally from Glasgow but has lived in the village for the last 20 years, said, "The event will see competitors tossing the caber, stone hurling, involved in a tug of war, and for the brave and committed there is also the Hill Run with a total of six activities based on the original games. All over 18s are welcome to take on a range of challenges in our version of the Highland Games. You don't have to be a super strong athlete, you just need to want to have some fun. The money raised from spectator and competitor tickets will see us a replacement artificial wicket and a permanent net built, enabling us to continue to provide outstanding cricket coaching and development throughout the year." "As the inaugural event we are keeping our targets modest with the focus on participation rather than performance, we really want people to be able to have a taste of a Highland Games. A full size caber is actually quite a significant challenge as they can be between 16-20 feet tall and weigh 40-70 kg so we also have some slightly downsized versions to maximise the participation. The full events are for adult competitors, but with child friendly versions alongside for visitors have a go. We are also introducing villagers to the delights of a proper ceilidh in the evening. Ticket sales for athletes and supporters are into the triple figures which is excellent and money raised will be going to Holybourne Cricket Club and 8th Alton Scouts."重要資訊
